In this course you will learn that when you add your own creative spin to your figurative drawings, your pieces acquire a new character and uniqueness of your own style. If as an artist you are searching for your voice, this course will help you recognize the importance of creative approach even in the most serious work.

We typically offer courses where you express people as you see them. This course is different: you will learn how to exaggerate the figure and add to it your creative imagination, inspired by the style of the Colombian artist Fernando Botero.

Fernando Botero is well known for his paintings of big people. We will start each day with a quick-hand sketching on paper, and even in this warm-up practice you will be encouraged to take creative license on how to draw each body - not as it shows in the image, but as somewhat “inflated”. This practice will enable you to be less attached to the exactness of the subject when you draw; instead you will learn to feel comfortable depicting a model with a sense of humor and creative attitude.

Through encouraging this playful creativity and imagination, this course will train you to expand your artistic means and take another step towards liberating your brush. You will begin to feel comfortable with the idea that animation characters and illustrations can be produced by borrowing some of the features from real life while exaggerating their features as you please and adding your own spin to them.
