From this course you will learn how to prepare your substrate in order to create a more unique-looking figure drawing in mixed media. You will start with making a dual-tone background using black paint. This will serve as a shortcut for expressing light and shadow on the figure. You will draw the model in black and white Conte, and then add details in Sanguine (terracotta color). With this technique, you can express the contrast between lights and shadows. Our model will hold one pose for the duration of the course - to give you time for creating two finished detailed drawings, or, if you are more experienced you will be able to complete 3 drawings.

Each class will start with a warm-up where you will sketch 10 gestural poses, following specific quick-hand techniques. This warm-up will help your eye-hand coordination and prepare you for the main project. For sketching, please bring 10 sheets of white cardstock per day (40 sheets total), a bristle brush of your choice, and a cup for diluted black tempera.

What you will learn:

  1. a fresh approach to figure drawing;
  2. a way to mix wet and dry media;
  3. that a creative background transforms the outcome;
  4. that you can always seek innovative solutions in a figurative class
  5. that a simple tweak in a process can trigger inspiration and creativity.
