Instructions

Week 2:

If you felt like you didn't fully grasp today's technique, I recommend doing another painting. You cannot expect to grasp Joan Mitchell's (or any artist's technique for that matter) in one class or in a single attempt. Joan Mitchell didn't even grasp her own technique in one artwork - it took try after try.

How to prepare for week 3 - grab 6 pieces of mix media paper or watercolor paper (it should be sturdy paper). Coat three pieces of paper with an even layer of gel (can be soft, regular, heavy, or extra heavy). Leave the other three pieces of paper as is (without any gel). If your gelled paper curls, you can either allow it to dry completely and put a heavy book on top or try adding gel to the other side.

You will also need some sort of squeegee or spatula, like an old credit card or something similar. It should be pretty rigid and not bend too easily.
