Week 2:

Leave your sketch from class as it. Instead of trying to make one piece "perfect", continue to practice, now with different subject matter. This time, go outside and sketch on location. Use the same materials, the same steps, the same technique - allow this to be the familiar aspect, and the only thing that changes is where you're sitting. You've already done it once, so that means you can definitely do it again! 

Choices for washes:

  • Blue washes for shadows
    
  • Blue plus white gouache for the sky and sky’s reflection

• Grey
  
  • Grey washes for shadows
  • Any color for the sky and the sky’s reflection
• Brown
  
  • Brown washes for shadows
  • Turquoise or blue for the sky and the sky’s reflection

Ways to find the eye level in real life:‍

• The level of the ocean
• Using a clear glass with water in front of your eyes
• Mark your eye level on a vertical surface

Week 1:

Practice finding the eye level in a photography. Follow the same steps we did in class. Find an inspiring photo of an area by your home, it could be the local coffee shop, a beautiful architectural facade, or the street view from your door step.

Ways to find the eye level in a photo reference (you could also use these methods in real life)

1. Use a horizontal ruler to find the horizontal line that goes through your entire picture
2. Extend the distorted surfaces of buildings with a straight line until those lines begin to intersect with one another

Tips, and the most important perspective-related things to remember when Urban Sketching:

Find your eye level with architectural elements: using the facets of buildings that are receding away from you.

1. Above your eye level, distorted edges appear to be coming down (towards your eye level)
2. Below your eye level, distorted edges appear to be coming up (towards your eye level)
3. At your eye level, distorted edges appear to be a straight horizontal line.
4. The further the distorted edges of the buildings are from your eye level, the more distorted they appear. The closer to the eye level, the less distorted those edges appear.
