Main project:

This may look like a lot of supplies, however we actually listed out different options for you. Pick one substrate option (stretched or unstretched canvas) and one painting medium (acrylic or oils).

Substrate options:

Option A - Stretched canvas + oil or acrylic paint

4 elongated, same-size primed and stretched canvases, size of your choice, such as 4x12", or 8x24”, or 12x36” (As long as the ratio is 1:3)

The benefit of using stretched canvas means when you complete the course, you will have four paintings, ready to hang or sell. Use either oils or acrylics, colors of your choice. With this option, no extra preparation is necessary.

Option B - Unstretched canvas + oils or acrylic paint

4 elongated, primed, unstretched, horizontal pieces of canvas, cut to the same size. These 4 pieces of canvas will require a support board: one board for all four canvases. This board will hold your canvas on the easel. Your canvas will be wrapped around this board and held by clamps.

How to Prepare Your Support Board for Option B: Your support board can be foam, wood, plastic, or sturdy cardboard. You need to cut this board to an elongated format of either 6x18”, or 8x24”, or 12x36”, or larger. The size is your choice - as long as the ratio of width to length is 1:3. The size of the board will determine the size of your painting.

How to Prepare Your Canvas for Option B: Before cutting canvas, make sure to add at least 3 inches around the perimeter of your painting area. These extra edges are necessary for stretching your painting. For example: if your board is 6x18”, your cut canvas needs to be 12x24”.

How To Prepare For Class for Option B: Before class, attach and secure your canvas to the board.

When your painting is dry, you will be able to take the canvas off, or wrap the second canvas over it. Use either oils or acrylics, colors of your choice.

Multiple unstretched canvases can be stored in one roll when finished, making it a great option for artists with low storage space.
