In this 6-week course, you will learn how to create convincing pen and ink drawings while embracing the spontaneity, movement, and character of visible mark-making.

Rather than striving for perfectly polished lines, we’ll explore how loose hatching, cross-hatching, gestural marks, and purposeful imperfections can build form, value, texture, and atmosphere. You'll learn to simplify complex subjects, suggest rather than describe details, and use the character of the mark itself to add movement and dynamism to your work.

These studies will lead into one more refined final drawing, where you'll will combine the techniques they’ve developed into a cohesive, finished piece.

Over six weeks, you'll:

This course is ideal for artists who want to strengthen their understanding of realism while moving beyond overly controlled or rigid drawing techniques. The goal is understand how expressive marks can coexist with accurate observation, and how looseness can actually make a realistic drawing feel more alive.
