Do you want to push your art to the creative limit and enrich your palette of new techniques? In this course, you’ll learn several applications of mixed media by combining gouache and oil pastels in five creative ways. Learn how gouache can complement oil pastels and how oil pastels can improve a gouache painting.
In any mixed media, you mix two or more mediums on one substrate. In this course you will learn how to incorporate drawing into painting. In addition to achieving the rich appearance of mixed media, you will learn how to improve your gouache painting by adding oil pastels to fix mistakes, adjust proportions, improve harmony, increase the tonal range, redefine composition, build layers, add details, establish focus, direct the viewer’s eye, create greater depth, and produce a more complex piece.
There is more: Drawing over gouache is like drawing on a special velvet-like paper. The tactile feel of working with oil pastels over gouache is delicious - gouache creates an extra-smooth surface that allows oil pastels to glide easier and spread more evenly, creating a luscious finish.
We will start with an underpainting in gouache and apply oil pastels on top. Through rigorous practice, instructor’s demonstrations, examples, and easy to understand explanations, you will become more comfortable with incorporating various mediums and building a dynamic artwork.
This technique allows you to be able to choose when to stop and when to keep going. In addition to it being a beautiful combination, there’s purposeful benefits and reasons why this combination is wonderful.
Week 1: Create 4 underpaintings in different styles: two with very clean shapes, two painterly (messily) done. Students can make more underpaintings as they need.
Week 2: Choose one of your underpaintings and learn how to use oil pastels to add dimension.
Week 3: Choose one of your underpaintings and practice correcting mistakes.
Week 4: Choose another underpainting and add visual interest and focus.
Week 5: Choose another underpainting and improve the color harmony and create a more complex piece.
Week 6: Last class is dedicated to refinements on any piece you want to continue working on + discussion and student exhibition
You’ll learn how to combine wet and dry mediums together, how to add contrast, how to correct mistakes, make an artwork more exciting, how to finish an artwork, add texture and details, how to make art quickly with an underpainting technique, how to create dimension, form, and focus.
This course will be informative and useful for beginners and eye opening for more advanced students.
